V8 Cafe

where one of my favourite pasta is...

A sudden craving for a hot, comforting pasta hit after one famishing long day of projectwork. Suggested it to Samantha and we came down for dinner without delay.

Known to be a movie cafe, this gem hidden in a corner of Bugis Junction takes on the atmosphere of a theatre. The place is dim with blue ceiling lights to illuminate the interior and multiple small televisions (sceening movies) to provide a dine-as-you-watch experience.

French Onion Soup

Every main course comes with a free bowl of soup which had never made the cut. All my three times here they served me with diluted cream soups containing terrible ingredients. Today's was no exception- simply too salty to drink up.

Soup aside, i'm glad that their main courses are far less disappointing. Apart from the highly raved-about chicken cutlet and chicken baked rice, i discovered another star of the menu... which manages to draw me back unfailingly.

This is it.

Black Pepper Seafood Spaghetti ($9.80)

On the professional judging scale this may not be one of the most skillful pasta dish but it was my type of pasta. Strands of spaghetti are cooked until soft and thick; then tossed in a blend of olive oil and plenty of real black pepper bits to give a delicious result. Not at all cloying even after continuous mouthfuls.

The highlight especially was how it boasted of an extremely strong garlic taste which gives the dish a good kick. It comes in two alternatives, but i would always pick the seafood over the chicken- acceptable, with canned button mushrooms and consistently fresh prawns.

The flavoursome overall simply agreed so much with my tastebuds. Entire plate cleared!

Seafood Spaghetti ($9.80)

Samanthas's order looked just like a usual marinara, except the sauce was more on the seafood based. She found it passable.

Leaving some stomach space for desserts here is a wise choice. They offer a prety good range of cheesecake slices including strawberry, oreo, cookies & cream, blueberry, walnut pecan, new york... i obviously went for my usual.

Blueberry Cheesecake ($3.80)

Definitely wasn't bad; just not the kind which would wow. Pretty light cheese with a distinct taste of sourcream and a smoothly-baked base bearing a faint buttery taste. Sadly, the sticky blueberry topping was a let-down.

Oreo Cheesecake ($3.80)
Looks good! A noteworthy slice of lighter, creamier cheese packed well with oreo flavour.

She also had a glass of cold Rootbeer ($1.80).

Service here can be very subjective- the servers were on extremes, some extremely humble and polite while some just very unobservant. It was a busy night for them but somehow the terribly slow service cannot be not forgiven.
