Dan Ryan's Chicago Grill

Immediate post-exam meal with dad. AMERICAN FOOD is one of my loves and we finally checked out this place we always mentioned of.

Looking lifeless and least eye-catching from the outside, i was surprised by its large interior when i entered. A small section by the side was taken up by a bar counter while the remaining was a typical wood-based dining area bustling with business- there were plenty of caucasians and even blacks!

Warning: this is a carb-loaded place.

Can you imagine in one meal we were actually served with bread, cake, muffins, biscuits, rice & potatoes? Just the first starter and it managed to take me aback already- their complimentary bread basket was like a meal in itself.

complimentary Bread Basket

Apart from the usual white loaf, they further filled it up with muffins and a warm cornbread cake. We left the atypical additions untouched- it was so much for 2 persons!

I was thankful we chose to take up the smaller version of their soups in cups instead of bowls. Dad's classic Clam Chowder made thick and chunky with potatoes unfortunately became too starchy for him. My Soup of the Day was also poorly done with many tiny pieces of fatty streaky bacons swimming in an unbearably salty broth. Both worth a miss.

New England Clam Chowder ($6)

Cabbage Soup ($4)

Pretty good time estimation here. Our main courses arrived not long after the soup bowls were cleared.

Grilled Salmon ($24)

After my memorable experience at TCC, i would always request for my salmon to be done medium-well. Sad to say, this version was unremarkably bland with an uneven execution of doneness. Even the accompanying buttered rice & vegetable were overkilling with salt. Pricey yet mediocre.

Grilled Pork Chops ($25)

I am no expert in judging pork chops but the small piece i tried was rather chewy. Dad found it lacking in taste.

N.Y. Cheesecake ($8.50)

Obviously pre-sliced and left to chill in the freezer. This slice of home-baked cheesecake we shared was ultra thick and heavily flavoured with lemon, so much that the creamy cheese was almost entirely masked out. Except for that, this proved to be very american style indeed.

then i realised.. they do warn you beforehand.

Total damage-$80. Some extent of authenticity beared in terms of the ambience and servings, but certainly not good enough to impress. Next on my list is to try Black Angus!
