Sarah and i have been talking all about having a proper japanese meal together since months ago; Not the usual sakae sushi fare but something much more authentic. I found this yakitori eatery in Cuppage Plaza so we agreed to try it.
Hidden from the busy streets of orchard, here's one good place for a quiet meal and some catching up. I was taken aback when i first stepped in- the interior was way smaller than i expected. You meet with an open concept sushi bar counter-cum-kitchen once you enter, where the chef displays his skills over a large charcoal grill.
A couple of resonably priced set lunches are offered, along with a considerable ala carte menu featuring long lists of yakitori and side items. Placed our orders and i began to watch the 2 chefs start preparation work; flaming was cool.
Dashi Tamaki Tamago ($5)
We could not resist picking one of the starters to kickoff our meal with. Disappointingly, this lukewarm egg ommelette tasted bland and beared no sign of dashi sweetness at all.
Yakitori Bento Set ($12.50)
It would be a futile visit not ordering yakitori in a yakitori joint, so sarah was set on getting this bento. Here we have 5 assorted sticks alongside a bed of rice, neatly laid with minced meat, seaweed and sliced mushrooms. I tried one of her quail eggs- the grilling gave it a dry and special surface which was not bad at all.
Maguro Tataki Set ($10)
I headed for their fresh cuts. No regrets. The tuna slices that sat above a salad with warm rice were surprisingly thick and beared no one bit of fishyness. Premium stuff at a steal of just $10. Even the kitsune udon by the side was a simple star dish yet made impressive- udon was springy and broth so delectable that i cleared every part of it.
